Arrival & Professionalism

  • Arrive on time and ready to work

  • Wear clean, professional attire

  • Clearly Display Proper Way ID Badge

  • Greet the client respectfully with a warm, friendly attitude

  • Maintain a positive, calm, and patient demeanor

  • Refrain from personal phone use or distractions during the visit

  • Respect the client’s home, space, and routines as you would your own

Preparation & Documentation

  • Review the care plan before beginning any tasks

  • Follow care plan instructions accurately and completely

  • Document services provided immediately after the visit

  • Report any changes in the client’s condition, mood, behavior, or environment to the care manager or supervisor

Communication & Respect

  • Practice active listening and give the client your full attention

  • Speak clearly, kindly, and respectfully

  • Knock before entering rooms and always respect personal boundaries

  • Use language and tone that is calm, compassionate, and reassuring

  • Encourage client choice and autonomy in all decisions

Safety & Hygiene

  • Wash hands before and after care tasks or food handling

  • Ensure client mobility and transfers are done safely

  • Remove any visible hazards (clutter, wet floors, loose rugs)

  • Sanitize high-touch surfaces and clean up after tasks

Daily Living & Nutrition

  • Assist with ADLs (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, etc.) per care plan

  • Prepare nutritious meals/snacks based on dietary needs and preferences

  • Ensure safe food handling and proper kitchen hygiene

  • Encourage hydration throughout the visit

Engagement & Companionship

  • Offer meaningful conversation and emotional support

  • Encourage hobbies, games, walks, or light activity

  • Help maintain a consistent, calming routine

  • Promote client independence where safe and appropriate

Emergency Preparedness

  • Know the client’s emergency contacts and care protocols

  • Recognize signs of health decline or distress

  • Follow emergency procedures and remain calm under pressure

Professionalism & Going the Extra Mile

  • Anticipate client needs and offer help without being asked

  • Take initiative to tidy up the environment (e.g., dishes, light laundry) if appropriate

  • Ask the client if there’s anything extra you can do before leaving

  • Show consistent empathy, patience, and encouragement

  • Follow through on small details (e.g., preferred routines, favorite meals, preferred music)

  • Support family members with updates or reassurance (if authorized)

  • Represent the Proper Way’s values with integrity and pride in your role
